Ciro Alves Eyes Naturalization, But Will He Join Indonesia's National Team?

Ciro Alves is reportedly considering the possibility of becoming an Indonesian citizen, though this does not automatically guarantee a place in the national football team. The 35-year-old Brazilian player, who has announced his departure from Persib Bandung at the end of the 2024-25 season, has shown openness to undergoing the naturalization process. This news has sparked hope among his fans, who have urged him to become a naturalized citizen, allowing him to fill a local player slot and potentially remain with the club.
Alves’ wife, Maria Eduarda Mondadori, has expressed strong support for the idea of naturalization. She revealed that the family plans to make Indonesia their permanent home, particularly in Bandung, where they are considering opening a business. Maria emphasized their desire to stay in Indonesia, even if Ciro moves to a different club, underscoring the family's intention to settle in Bandung for good.
Although Alves is eligible for naturalization after residing in Indonesia for over six years, joining the national team is a more complex issue. The Indonesian Ministry of Youth and Sports has indicated that future naturalization for the national team will be stricter, with a focus on players who have Indonesian ancestry. Given that Ciro does not have Indonesian roots, his potential naturalization might not qualify him for the national team, despite his long-term stay in the country.
