Pelicans Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin stated that the suspension is a result of Zion violating team rules. Zion will miss today’s away game against the Philadelphia 76ers but is expected to rejoin the team tomorrow.

According to renowned insider Shams Charania, Zion missed the team’s flight to Philadelphia yesterday due to tardiness, leading to the suspension. Another journalist, Chris Haynes, added that Zion has been late to practices multiple times this season, and combined with missing the flight, the Pelicans decided to suspend him for one game.

The 24-year-old Zion, the first overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, has played only seven games this season due to injuries. He is averaging 30.6 minutes per game, with 22.6 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 5.1 assists.

The Pelicans, plagued by significant injuries this season, have struggled mightily, currently sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference standings with a 7-31 record.
