Fined Before Transfer to Manchester United, Antony Takes Ajax to Court
According to Dutch media outlet De Telegraaf, Ajax imposed three fines on Antony, resulting in a significant deduction from his salary at the time. Antony hopes to recover this money, as he believes the fines were illegal.
A spokesperson for the Dutch Football Association Arbitration Committee confirmed that the case is under review and involves Ajax's fines on Antony: “However, we will not provide further comments on the documents in question.”
The dispute originates from Antony's final week at Ajax in August 2022, when he was awaiting a €100 million transfer to Manchester United during that summer. Since then, Antony has made 94 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 12 goals and providing 5 assists.
Antony was reportedly unhappy with the club's stance at the time, as Manchester United had been pursuing him for some time, but Ajax was dissatisfied with the offers made by the English club. As a result, Antony skipped several training sessions and, despite not being injured, missed Ajax's Eredivisie Matchday 3 game against Sparta Rotterdam.
After that particular match, Ajax’s then-head coach Alfred Schreuder commented that Antony was not 100% ready: “I only want players who are fully committed to Ajax. We’ve spoken about it, and I think it’s a difficult situation, but I’ve been honest about it.”
Ajax considered Antony's absences during this period unauthorized, leading to the player being fined up to three times. These amounts were deducted from his salary at the time.
Although Antony eventually secured his €100 million transfer to Manchester United just days after the Sparta Rotterdam game, he disagreed with the fines imposed. This disagreement triggered the ongoing dispute, which has now lasted two years. Antony ultimately decided to seek arbitration six months ago, with the substantive hearing taking place last Monday.
De Telegraaf also reached out to Antony's lawyer, who stated, “No comments can be made while the case is still under review.” The arbitration committee typically delivers its verdict within a month.
Antony joined Ajax in the summer of 2020 from São Paulo, where he had been part of the Brazilian club’s youth academy since the age of 10. Ajax paid over €20 million for the transfer and signed him to a five-year contract.
The Brazilian winger proved to be a tremendous asset under then-coach Erik ten Hag, becoming a key player and a standout performer during Ajax’s six consecutive wins in the 2021 Champions League group stage. Antony contributed five assists and two goals in those matches.
His performances quickly attracted the attention of major clubs, with Manchester United emerging as a leading contender. Antony himself was eager to move to the Premier League, believing that Ajax should not have rejected the English club’s offers and denied him such a significant opportunity. His representatives even warned that Ajax’s refusal to cooperate could affect the club’s future transfer dealings in Brazil.
Ajax, however, held firm in their negotiations with Manchester United, ultimately agreeing to sell him for €100 million. This made Antony one of the most expensive players in Premier League history.
