Borussia Dortmund Targets Renato Veiga Following Injury Crisis in Defense
Borussia Dortmund has revived its interest in Renato Veiga as the club looks to reinforce its defense following a serious injury to Niklas Süle. Süle is expected to be sidelined for two months after sustaining a calf injury during a pre-season match against Juventus. The situation is further complicated by the ongoing absence of Nico Schlotterbeck, who is still recovering from a significant knee injury, prompting Dortmund to urgently seek defensive reinforcements before the transfer window closes.
Among the options being considered is Juan Gimenez, a 19-year-old defender from Rosario Central in Argentina. The young talent has drawn attention, and Dortmund may need to prepare a fee between €5–8 million to secure his services. However, Renato Veiga remains a key target, as Dortmund previously came close to signing him during the January transfer window, reaching personal agreement terms before the move ultimately fell through.
Since then, Veiga has spent time on loan at Juventus, where he made 15 appearances across all competitions. Currently under contract with Chelsea until 2030 after being signed from FC Basel for £12 million, Veiga has struggled to break into the first team. His exclusion from Chelsea’s Club World Cup squad underlines his uncertain future at the club, with reports suggesting he is open to leaving to seek regular playing time.
Veiga’s versatility has been praised, having featured in several positions including central defense, full-back, and midfield. Despite early compliments from Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca for his adaptability and performances in the Conference League, the Portuguese player seems unlikely to have a key role in Chelsea’s plans this season. This situation could open the door for Dortmund to reignite negotiations and bring him in as a much-needed solution to their defensive problems.
