Manchester United Loses Interest in Denzel Dumfries After Release Clause Expires

Manchester United’s pursuit of Denzel Dumfries has cooled significantly following the expiration of the Dutch defender’s release clause. The clause, which allowed a €25 million buyout, was not activated by the club, forcing them to negotiate directly with Inter Milan if they still wished to sign him. Reports suggest that United is unwilling to pay a higher transfer fee, making a deal unlikely at this stage.
Dumfries’ situation remains complex as he recently changed agents to the influential Jorge Mendes, sparking renewed transfer rumors. Meanwhile, Inter Milan is actively working to extend his contract beyond 2028 and reportedly aims to remove any release clauses. The club sees Dumfries as a key player in their tactical setup under new coach Cristian Chivu, particularly valuing his role as a right wing-back.
Other top clubs such as Barcelona and Manchester City have also shown interest but have missed the opportunity to sign Dumfries at a lower price through the expired release clause. Despite this, Inter is reportedly open to selling the player if a reasonable offer comes in, with speculation placing his market value around €20 million.
Overall, while Manchester United’s initial enthusiasm has waned, Dumfries remains a sought-after talent. Inter Milan appears determined to keep him but may consider selling if the right proposal emerges, highlighting a tense transfer situation that could still develop before the window closes.
