Mauro Zijlstra Gains Presidential Approval, Set to Boost Indonesia U-23 Squad
The naturalization process for young forward Mauro Zijlstra has reached a significant milestone with the Indonesian President officially signing his application. This endorsement moves the process closer to final approval by the Parliament, which is expected to resume consideration in August after its recess. The Indonesian Football Association has been actively communicating with legislators, receiving positive signals about support for Zijlstra’s citizenship.
Zijlstra, who has mixed Indonesian and Dutch heritage, impressed last season with FC Volendam’s youth team, scoring 17 goals and providing four assists in 21 matches. His strong performances earned him promotion to the senior squad, highlighting his potential as a future asset for Indonesia’s national teams. Although he has only made a handful of senior appearances, the football association views him as a promising addition to the U-23 team’s attacking options.
The plan is for Zijlstra to join the Indonesian U-23 squad during the upcoming AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers held in September. The football association sees him as a key figure in the team’s regeneration, especially since the team currently has limited options in the striker position due to injuries. His youth and skill set make him a valuable candidate to develop at the U-23 level before potentially advancing to the senior team.
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding Zijlstra, the football association stresses that selection for the senior national team will follow a structured evaluation process through age-group levels. Additionally, there are reportedly one or two other naturalization candidates in the pipeline, but details remain confidential. The focus remains on ensuring that any new players fully commit to representing Indonesia at the highest level.
