Premier League Introduces Flexible Rules for Locker Room Media Access Next Season
Starting next season, Premier League clubs will have more flexibility in granting media access to their locker rooms, particularly in the event of a loss. This new regulation is part of a recent domestic broadcasting agreement with Sky Sports and TNT Sports, designed to enhance the viewing experience while respecting the teams’ need for privacy. Clubs will still be required to provide exclusive content such as locker room footage, halftime interviews, or live match interviews, but with greater control over when and how this access is given.

Under the updated rules, each club must allow at least two types of media access during the course of the season. However, if a team loses a match where such access was granted, they can revoke permission for that specific game. To compensate, clubs are expected to accommodate similar media requests in future matches to meet the broadcast commitments. This arrangement aims to balance clubs’ interests with the broadcasters’ demand for engaging content.

Media requests for access must be submitted at least five days before the match, and clubs are required to respond at least three days prior to kickoff. Broadcasters must specify their preferred types of access in order of priority, while clubs retain the right to approve or decline based on their preferences. Locker room access is strictly limited to certain times before kickoff, during halftime, or immediately after the match.

Clubs maintain full control over audio usage and must ensure that all content shared is positive and non-controversial, preventing potential disturbances or conflicts. This new framework strives to find a middle ground between transparency for fans and maintaining a comfortable environment for players and staff behind the scenes.
