New Era for Indonesian Football: Liga 1 Rebrands as BRI Super League

The Indonesian top-tier football competition, formerly known as Liga 1, will undergo a significant rebranding and be renamed the BRI Super League starting next season. This decision was finalized during a shareholders meeting in Jakarta, where all 18 participating clubs agreed to the new name. Along with the league's rebranding, the operating company PT Liga Indonesia Baru (PT LIB) will also adopt a new brand identity, moving away from its previous name.
In addition to the top league’s name change, Liga 2 will be renamed the Pegadaian Championship, while the semi-professional tier will continue to be called Liga Nusantara. The rebranding effort aims to refresh the image and marketing appeal of Indonesian football competitions, with PT LIB transitioning to the new brand “I-League” as part of this process.
The term “Super League” is not unfamiliar in Indonesia’s football history. The Indonesia Super League (ISL) operated as the country’s premier competition for eight seasons between 2008 and 2015. After a brief suspension of official leagues due to FIFA sanctions in 2015 and 2016, Liga 1 was introduced in 2017 and has now completed eight seasons under that name.
This upcoming rebranding marks the third major renaming in Indonesia’s professional football era, following the earlier transitions from Liga Indonesia to ISL, and then to Liga 1. The move signals a new chapter intended to elevate the league's stature and commercial potential in the evolving landscape of Indonesian football.
