Former J.League Executive Appointed as New General Manager of Indonesia’s Football League Operations

PT Liga Indonesia Baru (LIB) has taken a bold step ahead of the 2025-26 season by appointing Takeyuki Oya as General Manager of Competition and Operations. Oya brings over a decade of experience from Japan’s J.League 1, a league known for its high standards and professionalism across Asia. His recruitment is part of LIB’s broader strategy to elevate the management and structure of Indonesia’s domestic football competition.
The appointment was welcomed by PSSI Chairman Erick Thohir, who highlighted the move as a sign of LIB’s commitment to improving the league’s quality. Thohir emphasized the importance of patience, stating that meaningful reform in football operations takes time and cannot yield instant results. He encouraged stakeholders and the public to support Oya's work and understand that building a sustainable foundation requires a long-term vision.
Oya’s decision to join Indonesian football reportedly stems from his recognition of the nation’s potential and the seriousness of efforts to reform the sport. Thohir pointed out that the Japanese executive received multiple offers but chose Indonesia due to the clear commitment from the government, PSSI, and LIB. He stressed that national support, especially from fans, is essential to achieving lasting improvements in the sport.
The collaboration between PSSI and LIB continues to strengthen, despite PSSI holding only a minimal stake in the league’s operating body. Recent joint efforts have produced significant changes, including the implementation of a structured league calendar aligned with national team priorities. Moreover, the adoption of VAR technology in Indonesia’s second-tier league sets a progressive precedent, further demonstrating LIB’s readiness to embrace innovation and move the league forward.
