Indonesia Set for High-Stakes Fourth Round in 2026 World Cup Asian Qualifiers: Tough Opponents Await
Indonesia's national football team has advanced to the fourth round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers. This stage includes six teams that finished third and fourth in their respective groups during the third round. The format will split these teams into two groups of three, with each team playing two matches in a centralized location. Only the group winners will qualify directly for the World Cup, while the runners-up will proceed to a fifth-round playoff for a chance to enter the inter-confederation play-offs.

The official group draw is scheduled for July 17, 2025, in Osaka, Japan. The pot allocations for the draw are based on FIFA rankings and previous round standings. Indonesia has been placed in Pot 3 alongside Oman. Pot 1 includes Saudi Arabia and Qatar, while Pot 2 features the United Arab Emirates and Iraq. Due to competition rules, teams that were in the same group during the third round cannot be drawn together again, meaning Indonesia will avoid a rematch with Saudi Arabia in this stage.

Indonesia’s potential group opponents could include any combination from Pot 1 and Pot 2, such as Qatar with Iraq or Qatar with the UAE. Each of these potential opponents has significant experience on the international stage. Qatar, for instance, was the 2019 AFC Asian Cup champion and also hosted the 2022 World Cup. The UAE and Iraq have also made consistent appearances in Asian and World Cup qualification campaigns, making them formidable adversaries for the Indonesian squad.

The matches will take place on October 8, 11, and 14, 2025, at a venue yet to be confirmed by the Asian Football Confederation. With only two matches to play, the margin for error is minimal. Each result will be crucial in determining whether Indonesia can make it to their first-ever World Cup appearance. The upcoming draw in July will provide a clearer picture of their path and the level of challenge they will face in this decisive round.
