Indonesia Surges Ahead of Thailand and Vietnam in World Cup Qualification Battle

Between 2018 and 2025, Southeast Asia's football giants—Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam—have all taken turns competing in the intense third round of AFC World Cup Qualifiers. Thailand made its mark in 2018 but struggled to make an impact, finishing last in their group with only two points. Vietnam followed in 2022, delivering a spirited campaign but ultimately falling short with four points and also ending at the bottom of the table.

In 2025, Indonesia has emerged as the region’s standout performer, showing significant improvement under head coach Patrick Kluivert. As of matchweek eight, the team has collected nine points, surpassing the historical performances of both Thailand and Vietnam in previous editions. With just one more win needed to secure advancement to the next round, Indonesia is in a strong position to achieve what no ASEAN team has accomplished in this stage of the qualifiers.

Statistically and competitively, Indonesia is setting a new benchmark for ASEAN football in the World Cup qualification process. While past efforts by Thailand and Vietnam fell short despite their efforts, Indonesia now has a real shot at progressing further. With a cohesive squad, a clear game plan, and growing confidence, the team carries the hopes of a nation and the region as they aim to make history on football’s biggest stage.
