Jamie Carragher’s Son Chooses Malta Over England for International Duty

James Carragher, son of former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher, has received his first international call-up—but not for England. Instead, the Wigan Athletic defender will represent Malta, a country he qualifies for through his grandfather.
Recently granted Maltese citizenship, the 22-year-old has been included in the squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Finland and Poland. These matches will mark the debut of Malta’s new head coach, Emilio De Leo.
Jamie Carragher, who retired in 2013, earned 38 caps for England and played in two World Cups. Now a prominent football pundit, his son is set to begin his own international career on a different path.
