Messi Left Out of Argentina Squad for World Cup Qualifiers—Here’s Why

Lionel Messi will miss Argentina’s upcoming World Cup 2026 qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil in March 2025 due to injury. The decision was made after the Inter Miami star suffered a setback following his latest match with the club.

At 37, Messi had already missed three games for Inter Miami earlier in March due to a muscle issue but made a strong return, scoring as a substitute in the CONCACAF Champions Cup before playing a full 90 minutes and finding the net in an MLS win over Atlanta United. However, reports from Argentina indicate he experienced discomfort again after the match.

Argentina will also be without key players Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Montiel, who are sidelined due to injuries. Despite these absences, the team remains at the top of the South American qualifying standings, holding a five-point lead over Uruguay.

Meanwhile, Brazil faces its own setback, as Neymar has been ruled out with a thigh injury. The 33-year-old’s absence adds to the challenges for coach Fernando Diniz, whose team sits fifth in the standings, trailing Argentina by seven points.
