The "Lightning" made a significant leap into the European competition zone after the last round, overtaking Mallorca by a single point, a team that has been struggling with defeats since the start of the year. Currently, the team managed by Inigo Perez is on an impressive unbeaten streak in La Liga that has lasted since early December. In their first winter match, the Madrid side suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of Athletic Club but haven’t lost to anyone else since. Last year, Rayo Vallecano secured an away victory against Valencia before drawing three consecutive matches, where they were not favored – 3:3 in the home derby against Real Madrid and 1:1 in away games against Villarreal and Betis.
After the winter break, Inigo Perez's team managed to defeat Celta at home 2:1, but they were eliminated from the Copa del Rey after a 1:3 defeat to Real Sociedad in San Sebastian, and then drew with Osasuna in Pamplona. They later achieved a hard-fought home victory over Girona with a score of 2:1, thanks to a brace from Randy Nteka, who scored twice within three minutes after coming on as a substitute. Near the end of the match, the Catalans attempted to stage a comeback, creating several good chances, but Augusto Batalla denied the equaliser. In the previous round, the "Lightning" achieved a minimal away victory against Leganes. Despite a fairly level and generally drab match, the visitors gained a numerical advantage before the break; however, it was Pathe Ciss who scored what turned out to be the winning goal in the 78th minute. This goal could have been negated if not for Augusto Batalla, who saved two penalties from Miguel de la Fuente in the 15 minutes of stoppage time.
Real Valladolid
The "White-Purples" are slowly sinking, and hope for salvation is dwindling even among their own fans. Currently, the Pucelanos are stuck at the bottom of the La Liga table, with only 15 points to their name. Even if they manage to win, they will remain at the bottom, and the gap to safety at the 17th place is now eight points. The year began disastrously for Diego Cocca's team with a surprising exit from the Copa del Rey against third-division side Orense, but following that setback, they clinched a crucial 1:0 victory over Betis.
However, in their next three fixtures, Valladolid failed to collect any points, while their competitors each secured two victories during this period. One of these rivals, Espanyol, has already managed to escape the relegation zone, with Valladolid losing to them away a few weeks ago by a score of 1:2. A week later, they suffered a dismal 0:3 defeat at home to Real Madrid, and last weekend Diego Cocca's team faced a heavy defeat against Villarreal – 1:5. In the first half, Valladolid held their ground, managing to launch counterattacks, but everything fell apart after the break. The final score could have been even worse, as Ayoze Perez had plenty of chances to score a hat-trick but only found the net once.
