Reasons Behind PSSI's Selection of Patrick Kluivert as Indonesia's National Team Coach
The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) officially appointed Patrick Kluivert as the new head coach of the national team on January 8, 2025, replacing Shin Tae-yong. However, the choice of Kluivert has raised some eyebrows, especially considering that two other Dutch coaches, Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Frank de Boer, were seen as having stronger resumes in terms of coaching experience.
Football analyst Haris Pardede shed some light on why PSSI ultimately chose Kluivert over the other candidates. He explained that Kluivert was seen as more willing to compromise, particularly when it came to selecting assistant coaches. Unlike the previous coach, Shin Tae-yong, who brought a large contingent of coaching staff from South Korea, Kluivert was open to allowing PSSI to screen and approve his assistants.
PSSI appears keen to avoid the same issues that arose under Shin Tae-yong, where the presence of foreign staff led to friction with players, as Shin's behavior was sometimes seen as overly authoritative. According to Pardede, Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Frank de Boer, who were also in the running, had more rigid demands regarding their support staff.
Van Bronckhorst, in particular, wanted to bring in his own team, including physical trainers and other staff members, a stance that likely contributed to PSSI's decision to go with Kluivert. Similarly, Frank de Boer, known for his strong-willed approach, also clashed with the idea of compromising on staffing.
Pardede further speculated that Kluivert's willingness to work within the framework set by PSSI, including allowing for the screening of his assistants, ultimately made him the more agreeable choice. While some may have viewed the timing of his interview during the Christmas holidays as a gimmick, it seems that Kluivert's flexibility was the key factor in his selection.
