Persija to Start Super League Season Without Key Midfielder Ryo Matsumura
Persija Jakarta will be without their influential attacking midfielder Ryo Matsumura for the first half of the 2025-26 BRI Super League season due to a serious injury sustained during preseason. The 31-year-old Japanese player suffered a setback that required surgery, forcing the club’s management to exclude him from the initial squad registration. This decision aims to allow sufficient time for Ryo’s recovery, which is expected to take three to four months.

Since joining Persija last season, Ryo has been a crucial player, known for his speed, vision, and goal-scoring ability, often providing a significant impact in attack. His absence leaves a notable gap in the team, especially since he is currently the only foreign player who is not Brazilian in Persija’s squad. The team already has ten foreign players registered, close to the maximum quota allowed for the season.

Coach Mauricio Souza confirmed that Ryo’s condition is improving but not yet fit for competitive play, with plans to register him again during the January transfer window once he has fully recovered. Despite missing Ryo and striker Gustavo Almeida in their opening match, Persija started the season strongly with a convincing 4-0 win over Persita Tangerang at the Jakarta International Stadium.

Regarding the possibility of signing new foreign players to cover for Ryo’s absence, Souza clarified that transfer decisions rest with the club’s management rather than the coaching staff. While the coach can recommend players, the final process and authority lie with the management, leaving the potential recruitment uncertain at this stage.
