Although the club’s majority owner claimed to have sold his shares in Lyon before the deadline, CAS determined that he still maintained significant influence over both teams when the assessment was made. As a result, Nottingham Forest retained their place in the Europa League, while Crystal Palace missed out on the chance to compete in Europe’s secondary tournament. This ruling marks a significant blow to Palace’s continental ambitions.
The timing of the verdict was particularly unfortunate, coming just one day after Palace celebrated a dramatic Community Shield victory against Liverpool. The win, secured through penalties, showcased the team’s resilience and potential under manager Oliver Glasner. Despite the disappointment, Glasner encouraged the team to focus on the future and cherish the moment of success.
Goalkeeper Dean Henderson expressed deep frustration, describing the CAS decision as unfair to the sport and lamenting how it denied the fans a long-awaited European journey.
