Exciting Clash of Four Nations at the 2025 Independence Cup: Indonesia U-17 Faces Asia’s Champion
The Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) has confirmed the final lineup for the 2025 Independence Cup, scheduled to take place in Medan, North Sumatra, from August 12 to 18. The tournament will feature four teams: the host Indonesia U-17, along with Uzbekistan U-17, Tajikistan U-17, and Mali U-17. Originally, PSSI intended to invite a team from the Americas, but logistical challenges led to Uzbekistan filling that spot instead.

Uzbekistan’s participation adds significant weight to the competition, as they recently secured the title of U-17 Asian Champions after a dominant performance in Saudi Arabia. Their impressive run included five consecutive victories and a decisive semifinal win against North Korea, a team that had previously defeated Indonesia with a wide margin. This sets the stage for a tough challenge for Indonesia’s young squad, known as Garuda Muda.

The tournament will use a round-robin format where all teams face each other, and the team with the highest points at the end will be crowned champion. Beyond the prestige of the cup, the event serves as an important preparation ground ahead of the U-17 World Cup in Qatar later this year, where all four participants have already secured their spots.

Each team’s World Cup group placement further highlights the high level of competition they face in both tournaments. Indonesia will compete in a challenging group alongside Brazil, Zambia, and Honduras. The Independence Cup thus acts as a crucial testing ground for strategies and team dynamics, providing valuable experience ahead of the global stage.
