Massimiliano Allegri has made it his mission to unlock Rafael Leao’s full potential at AC Milan by adopting a strategic approach similar to how he once managed Cristiano Ronaldo at Juventus. Rather than forcing Leao into a rigid tactical role, Allegri is crafting a system that allows the Portuguese winger to focus on his attacking strengths without being burdened by excessive defensive duties.
In contrast to previous managers who pushed Leao to track back more, Allegri is giving him the freedom to operate in the final third, using his pace and creativity where they matter most. This mirrors the 2018-2019 setup at Juventus, where Ronaldo was freed from defensive tasks thanks to smart positional balancing, often provided by midfielders like Blaise Matuidi. At Milan, Christian Pulisic is expected to take on a similar supporting role, adjusting his position to help maintain team balance.
A key part of this plan involves reinforcing the midfield behind Leao. Players like Youssouf Fofana and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are seen as capable options to provide defensive cover with their energy and physical presence.
