Controversy Arises Over Indonesia’s Absence from ACC Shopee Cup 2025-26

The absence of Indonesian clubs from the upcoming ASEAN Club Championship (ACC) Shopee Cup 2025-26 has sparked confusion and debate after conflicting statements emerged from the Southeast Asian Football Federation (AFF) and Indonesia’s league operator, PT Liga Indonesia Baru (LIB). Both parties have given different reasons for why no Indonesian team will participate in the tournament.
According to the AFF, Indonesia failed to submit the required registration forms by the deadline, resulting in no Indonesian clubs being included in the official tournament draw. This explanation suggests that procedural delays or negligence on Indonesia’s part led to their exclusion. On the other hand, the head of PT LIB, Ferry Paulus, insisted that two clubs, Persebaya Surabaya and Malut United, were indeed registered but were rejected by AFF because they did not meet the top-ranking criteria set for tournament eligibility.
This disagreement points to a significant lack of coordination and communication between the football authorities in the region. While AFF claims there was no registration at all, PT LIB argues that the rejection was based on performance criteria rather than missed deadlines. This conflicting narrative has left fans frustrated, as they were eager to see Indonesian teams compete on a regional level.
So far, the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) has not issued any statement to clarify the situation or mediate between AFF and PT LIB. The absence of clear communication has only deepened concerns about governance and collaboration among Indonesian football institutions, leaving supporters disappointed about the missed opportunity.
