Major Club Rebranding in Indonesian Football: Persikas Becomes Sumsel United, PISA Turns into Cirebon United
The 2025 PSSI Ordinary Congress, held in Jakarta, marked a significant shift in Indonesian football with a wave of club rebranding and relocation decisions. One of the most notable changes came from Persikas Subang, which officially rebranded as Sumsel United and relocated its base to Palembang, South Sumatra. This move signals a bold step away from the club’s West Java origins in Subang to a new chapter in Sumatra.

The transformation of Persikas into Sumsel United is more than just a name change—it represents a strategic effort to develop a stronger football presence in South Sumatra. With Palembang’s established football culture and history of hosting major tournaments, the club aims to reignite local enthusiasm and build a competitive team that resonates with the region’s passionate supporters.

Another significant change saw PISA rebranded as Cirebon United, with a renewed focus on embedding the club more deeply in the northern coastal city of West Java. The name was chosen to reflect a stronger local identity and foster a deeper connection with the community. The club’s leadership hopes that this new identity will help drive the development of young talent and restore pride in Cirebon’s football ambitions.

Overall, a total of 24 clubs underwent name changes, while one changed its provincial base, reflecting a broader reorganization within Indonesian football. These changes are seen as part of a larger effort to professionalize and regionalize the league system, making clubs more aligned with their local communities and better equipped for future growth.
