Serie A Plans Historic AC Milan vs Indonesian Club Match 13,000 Kilometers From Home
Serie A has announced a bold plan to host a match between AC Milan and the Indonesian-backed club Como far from Italy, choosing Perth, Australia as the venue. The distance from Italy to Perth is approximately 13,291 kilometers, making this an unprecedented move in European football. The game is scheduled for the 2025-2026 season, with the exact dates set for early February 2026, during the winter period. This plan comes after the original venue, Milan's San Siro stadium, will be occupied by the Winter Olympics opening ceremony.

If carried out, this event would mark the first time a European league match is played outside the continent. Such a concept is not entirely new, as English Premier League officials had previously discussed the idea of staging matches abroad. This was first floated in 2008 and has seen some revival recently with American broadcasters expressing interest in hosting English games on U.S. soil during preseason events, which were well received.

Historically, while no major European league matches have been held overseas, some domestic cup competitions have ventured abroad. For instance, Spain’s Supercopa has been held in Saudi Arabia through a partnership with the Saudi football federation. Similarly, Italy’s Supercoppa Italiana has been played in Saudi Arabia multiple times from 2018 through 2023, with plans to continue this arrangement in future years.

The Serie A initiative highlights a growing trend in football towards globalization and expanding fan bases beyond traditional borders. By staging such a significant match in Australia, the league aims to reach new audiences and explore innovative approaches to the sport’s commercial and cultural growth worldwide.a
