Emil Audero's Setback Paves the Way for National Team Duty
Emil Audero, the naturalized goalkeeper for Indonesia, faced disappointment as his team, Palermo, failed to secure promotion to Serie A. In a tense playoff match on May 18, 2025, Palermo lost 1-0 to Juve Stabia, with the only goal coming from Andrea Adorante in the 67th minute. Audero played the full 90 minutes but was unable to prevent the defeat, which ended Palermo’s hopes of advancing to Italy's top division. This loss also marked the conclusion of Audero's loan spell at Palermo, and he will now return to his parent club, Como, which has already secured its spot in Serie A for the 2025-26 season.

While the setback with Palermo is disappointing, it opens up an important opportunity for Audero with the Indonesia national team. He is scheduled to join the national team's training camp in Bali, starting on May 26, 2025, ahead of crucial World Cup qualifiers against China and Japan. His presence is particularly vital with the absence of goalkeeper Maarten Paes, who will be suspended due to an accumulation of yellow cards. Audero's experience and skills will provide a significant boost to the Indonesian squad as they prepare for these must-win matches.

The upcoming clash against China on June 6, 2025, is a do-or-die match for Indonesia, who currently sit fourth in Group C with nine points, four behind Australia in second place. A win is crucial for the Garuda’s hopes of securing direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup or at least advancing to the next round. With over a month to prepare, coach Patrick Kluivert will be counting on Audero to strengthen the team’s defense and help lead them to a historic World Cup qualification.
