Persebaya Secures AFC Club License, Edges Closer to Asian Competition Dreams

Persebaya Surabaya has officially obtained its AFC club license, a significant milestone that opens the door for participation in Asian football tournaments. The club received a "Granted with Sanction" status for the AFC Champions League 2 and a full "Granted" status for the AFC Challenge League and Liga 1, confirming that Persebaya has met the core professional and administrative standards set by the Asian Football Confederation.
The licensing process was rigorous and comprehensive, involving both documentation and practical evaluations across several categories, including infrastructure, sporting performance, legal and financial compliance, administration, and human resources. Persebaya’s ability to fulfill these criteria demonstrates its commitment to raising its operational standards to a continental level, although certain areas still require improvement to meet the highest AFC competition tier.
Despite securing the license, Persebaya’s path to playing in Asia is not guaranteed just yet. The team must still finish in one of the top two spots in the 2024-25 Liga 1 standings to qualify for AFC tournaments. The license provides the eligibility, but sporting performance on the field will ultimately decide whether Persebaya makes its long-awaited return to the Asian stage.
