Why Liverpool Missed Out on the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup Despite a Strong Season
Liverpool will be absent from the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, despite their strong performances in recent seasons. The tournament, which is set to take place in the United States with an expanded 32-team format, features top clubs like Manchester City, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich. FIFA’s regulation limiting participation to a maximum of two clubs per country is the primary reason for Liverpool’s exclusion, as England is already represented by City and Chelsea.

Qualification for the revamped Club World Cup is based on a four-year UEFA Champions League performance cycle. Chelsea secured their spot by winning the 2020–21 Champions League, while Manchester City qualified through their 2022–23 triumph. Although Liverpool ranked higher in UEFA’s coefficient than Chelsea, they missed a key opportunity by losing the 2022 Champions League final to Real Madrid. That result ultimately kept them out of the tournament.

Looking ahead, Liverpool’s next realistic shot at joining the Club World Cup will be in 2029. The team, now under the leadership of Arne Slot, will use the summer to regroup with a preseason tour in Asia. Despite their early exits from European and domestic cup competitions, the Reds still managed to claim a league title and will aim to rebuild and compete for every major trophy in the upcoming season.
