Italy's National Team Roster: Napoli, Inter Milan, and Atalanta Dominate, AC Milan Absent

Italy’s head coach, Luciano Spalletti, appears to align his squad selection with the current Serie A standings. The top three clubs—Inter Milan, Napoli, and Atalanta—have shown the best form this season, making them the primary contributors to the national team for the upcoming matches on March 20 and 23.
Italy is set to face Germany in the UEFA Nations League 2024-2025 quarter-finals. The first leg will take place in Milan, followed by an away match in Dortmund. The outcome of these fixtures will also influence Italy’s path in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers. A victory would place them in Group A alongside Slovakia, Northern Ireland, and Luxembourg, while a defeat would see them in Group I with Norway, Israel, Estonia, and Moldova.
Spalletti announced his squad on March 14, with Napoli providing the largest contingent: Alex Meret, Alessandro Buongiorno, Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Matteo Politano, and Giacomo Raspadori. Inter Milan and Atalanta each contributed three players—Inter with Alessandro Bastoni, NicoloBarella, and DavideFrattesi, while Atalanta sent Matteo Ruggeri, Daniel Maldini, and Mateo Retegui. Ruggeri is one of two debutants in the squad, joined by Torino midfielder Cesare Casadei.
Juventus, Fiorentina, Torino, and Lazio also have representatives in the squad, but AC Milan is notably absent. This omission is unsurprising, given the club’s reliance on foreign players and its recent struggles. Matteo Gabbia is one of the few local options, but his exclusion is understandable considering Milan’s underwhelming performances.
