Arema FC Coach Explains Reason Behind Wiliam Marcilio’s Recent Benchings

Ze Gomes, the head coach of Arema FC, addressed the decision to bench Wiliam Marcilio in the club’s last two matches in the 2024-25 Liga 1 season, including the 1-1 draw against PSM Makassar on February 10, 2025. Despite the team's need for a goal, Ze opted to bring on Bayu Setiawan at the start of the second half, replacing Dendi Santoso instead of the Brazilian midfielder, who had already scored five goals and provided seven assists. Later, in the 70th minute, rather than bringing on Wiliam, Ze chose Hamzah Titofani to replace Salim Tuharea.
Wiliam was only introduced in the 85th minute, when Arema had a numerical advantage after Balotelli was shown a red card. This gave him just five minutes, plus three minutes of added time, to make an impact on the pitch.
Ze emphasized that for him, the club’s interests always come first, above any individual player. While acknowledging that Wiliam had limited time on the field, Ze recognized that the player still contributed significantly. Wiliam came close to scoring a late winner in the match, missing a shot from a Pablo Oliveira pass in the 87th minute and failing to convert a low drive in the 90+4 minute, which was saved by PSM’s goalkeeper Reza Arya.
In addition to his attacking contributions, Wiliam also made one assist, an interception, and a tackle, showing his involvement in both offensive and defensive aspects of the game. Ze concluded by reiterating that the team’s collective goals and the club's priorities always take precedence over individual performances.
