Sergio Ramos Close to Signing with Mexican Club
Sergio Ramos, the legendary Real Madrid and Spain defender, is on the brink of securing a new club after a period of being without a team. The 38-year-old center-back is set to sign a contract with Monterrey, a top-tier Mexican league club, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Ramos has struggled to find a new team since leaving Sevilla last summer, but he has now reached a personal agreement with Monterrey. He is expected to undergo a medical examination in Mexico on Monday (February 3) before finalizing the deal.
Romano confirmed, "Sergio Ramos is heading to Rayados—here we go! Pre-contract was signed today, and he'll fly to Mexico for the formal steps."
After his time at Sevilla, Ramos will continue his career in Mexico, joining Monterrey on a free transfer. Both parties have already agreed on the financial terms of the contract, including a salary and performance bonuses that could total up to $6 million. The deal also includes stipulations regarding Ramos' image rights, particularly tied to his 2010 World Cup win with Spain.
According to journalist Willie González, one of the key points in the negotiations involved securing a percentage of royalties from the sale of jerseys featuring Ramos’ name. This was especially important given Monterrey’s profitable partnership with Puma, which generates significant revenue from merchandise sales.
González reported, "The negotiations focused heavily on the royalty percentage that Sergio Ramos and his brother René wanted to secure from jersey sales, a critical factor in finalizing the deal, particularly because Monterrey shares revenue from Puma's sales."
