Lewandowski: "Scoring 5 Goals in 9 Minutes Will Stay With Me for Life"

Bayern Munich legend Robert Lewandowski recently reflected on his historic feat of scoring five goals in nine minutes during an interview with FourFourTwo. He stated that the moment will stay with him for the rest of his life, though he admitted feeling a tinge of regret for missing out on a sixth goal.



On September 22, 2015, in the 6th round of the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich defeated Wolfsburg 5-1. Coming off the bench, Lewandowski scored an astonishing five goals in nine minutes, setting four world records in the process.



Looking back on the achievement more than nine years later, Lewandowski shared his thoughts:

“Even after the game, I didn’t fully realize what I had done. I knew I had scored goals, but then Müller pushed me in front of the fans after the match, and I asked him why. Sure, we had won, and I had scored, but I didn’t think I had done anything historic.”

Lewandowski continued:

“During those nine minutes, I felt like I was somewhere else. I wasn’t thinking about how many minutes had passed or how many goals I had scored. After the first goal, I thought, ‘Okay, it’s 1-1; you need to score a second.’ After the second goal, I thought, ‘Alright, you need a third, and then we’ll definitely win.’ Then I scored the third, fourth, and fifth goals, but I still wasn’t thinking about how many goals I’d scored—I was just looking for the next opportunity.”



Lewandowski even had a chance to achieve a "double hat-trick" in that game, and he still feels a bit of regret about missing it:

“I had the chance to score a sixth goal, but someone cleared the ball. After the game, I was a bit annoyed because I could’ve scored six. But later, I told myself, ‘A sixth goal in under 10 minutes? That’s impossible.’ I didn’t even know how much time had passed.”



He concluded:

“Scoring five goals in nine minutes—those two numbers, 5 and 9, are something epic, and they will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
